How we tested
Every app here was installed and used personally. We capture raw findings — typed notes, screenshots, screen recordings, voice memos — and the writing is AI-assisted from those raw notes. Our verdict
We'd recommend Pray.com only to listeners who specifically want James Earl Jones reading the Bible or Charlton Heston Presents the Bible — those celebrity audio assets are unique to this app, and they're genuinely well-produced. Bedtime Bible Stories for kids are also a real differentiator. If those specific assets are what you want, the audio content is worth experiencing. If they aren't, the rest of the audio prayer-and-Bible market offers comparable quality at meaningfully better pricing transparency. Skip Pray.com if you're sensitive to paywall friction, if you want clear and consistent pricing, or if privacy practices in Christian apps matter to you. Hallow Plus at $69.99/year offers comparable production polish (often higher) with transparent pricing and clean cancellation. Dwell at $59.99/year offers better English audio polish for commuters specifically. Bible.is is free and offers dramatized audio in 2,600+ languages. The audio Bible market in 2026 has cleaner-priced options than Pray.com, and we'd send most users to those alternatives unless the specific celebrity content is what you're after.

Setup and first run
Installing Pray.com is a polished onboarding that does its job — and what its job is, is moving you to the paywall as fast as possible. We installed it on a fresh iPhone and were taken through a sequence: warm questions about your faith goals, a sample of celebrity-narrated audio (James Earl Jones reading a brief passage), then a paywall offering a free trial.
The audio sample at the start is the right way to evaluate the app, because the audio is genuinely the value. James Earl Jones's voice reading scripture lands in a way no other Bible app's audio does. We'd encourage anyone considering Pray.com to listen to that sample carefully — if the celebrity voice specifically matters to you, the rest of this review will help you decide whether the trade-offs are acceptable. If it doesn't, the rest of the audio Bible market has cleaner-priced options.
Account creation is required before you can do anything substantive. The trial-to-paid transition is the part of the onboarding that's been the most flagged in App Store reviews, and we'd recommend setting a calendar reminder for the day before any trial ends, regardless of whether you intend to subscribe.
Day-to-day use
We used Pray.com primarily for two jobs over multiple weeks: morning audio Bible listening with celebrity narrators, and evening bedtime Bible stories for kids.
Celebrity-narrated audio
James Earl Jones reading the Bible is the headline asset, and it lives up to the billing. We listened to extensive Old Testament passages with his narration during morning coffee over a week, and the audio quality is genuinely a different experience from typical Bible-app narration. The voice gravity, pacing, and production all sit at a level the rest of the category doesn't reach. Charlton Heston Presents the Bible is similarly produced, anchored in older Hollywood gravitas, and well-engineered.
The other audio content — produced devotional series, themed prayer journeys, audio Bible stories — is also high-quality, though without the unique-celebrity angle of the Jones and Heston content. We'd describe the production as on par with Hallow and Dwell for the non-celebrity content; the celebrity content is the meaningful differentiator.
Bedtime Bible stories
We tested the kids' bedtime Bible stories with kids in the household over multiple evenings, and the content held attention better than typical kids' faith content. Voice talent and pacing are designed for younger ears, and the story selection is age-appropriate. For parents who want a faith-grounded alternative to bedtime audio kids would otherwise consume, this is genuine value.
Group prayer
The group prayer features are more developed than most prayer apps, but not the headline reason to use Pray.com. We tested with a small group during the testing window, and the experience was competent — shared prayer items, group notifications, light social features. Echo Prayer's dedicated tool is more focused; Hallow's family plan is more polished. Pray.com's groups are a competent third option, not a primary reason to subscribe.
Where it surprised us
The audio production polish was higher than we'd remembered from previous testing. The current audio Bible content is genuinely well-engineered, and beyond the celebrity assets, the everyday narration is on par with Hallow and Dwell for similar content. If we could ignore the paywall situation, the audio quality alone would justify a strong recommendation.
The kids' bedtime stories were a quiet differentiator. We hadn't fully appreciated this category going in, and after testing with kids in the house, it became the second-most-compelling reason to consider Pray.com after the celebrity audio. Most Bible apps treat kids' content as an afterthought; Pray.com has invested real production budget here.
The Verizon partnership exists and is worth checking. Verizon customers can access a special monthly plan that's more transparent about pricing than the standard subscription tiers. If you're a Verizon customer, this is the path of least friction.
Where it disappointed
The pricing variation between users is the central issue, and it's the reason we score Pray.com lower than the audio quality alone would suggest. Reports of $7.99/month, $79.99/year, and $120+/year for the same product, varying by region and entry point, are documented across years of App Store reviews. We saw multiple price points across our testing sessions, which lined up with what other reviewers have reported. For an app whose entire monetization is the paid subscription, the lack of pricing transparency is a real problem.
The trial-to-paid transitions are the second issue. App Store reviews repeatedly flag confusing trial flows and difficulty cancelling. We didn't experience the worst of this in our testing, but the volume of complaints across years and platforms suggests this isn't isolated user error — it's a documented pattern. Cancellation through your phone's OS subscription settings is the reliable path; in-app cancellation is reportedly less reliable.
The privacy practices have been flagged by Mozilla's Privacy Not Included program as needing improvement. The specific concerns have evolved over time, but the program has consistently included Pray.com in its 'needs improvement' tier. For users who care about privacy in faith apps, this is worth knowing.
The Bible-text features are an afterthought. There's a basic Bible reader, but no real study tools, no notes worth keeping, no cross-references. If you want a Bible-text-first experience, Pray.com is the wrong app.
The free tier is severely restricted. Most of what you see in marketing is locked, and you'll need the trial of Premium to actually evaluate the content.
The pricing reality
Pray.com Premium is reported to cost $79.99–$120/year depending on region, entry point, and the paywall variant the app shows you. Some users see $7.99/month variants. The Verizon partnership offers a more transparent rate for Verizon customers.
The practical advice if you want the audio content:
- Screenshot the price before subscribing, in case it changes between sessions.
- Set a calendar reminder for the day before any trial ends.
- Confirm cancellation through your phone's OS subscription settings, not just inside the app.
- Watch for the Verizon partnership rate if you're a Verizon customer.
Compared with the rest of the category, Pray.com is the most expensive while also being the least transparent. Hallow Plus at $69.99/year offers comparable production polish and clean pricing. Dwell at $59.99/year offers better English audio polish for commuters specifically. Bible.is is free and offers dramatized audio in more languages than Pray.com supports. The audio Bible market in 2026 has cleaner-priced options than Pray.com.
All paid plans visible on the Pray.com App Store listing. Free trials and intro pricing may vary by region.
Weekly
- Pray.com Premium Subscription$1.99–$7.99
Monthly
- Premium Subscription No Ads$14.99
One-time
- Pray Bible Experience$49.99
- Pray Bible Experience$59.99
- Pray Bible Experience$69.99
- Pray Bible Experience$109.99
Who else should consider it
Parents specifically wanting celebrity-narrated bedtime Bible stories for kids — this is the use case where Pray.com is most differentiated, and the pricing concern matters less if you're paying for content the whole family uses regularly.
Verizon customers get a more transparent pricing path through the Verizon partnership, which makes the financial calculus more reasonable.
Listeners who specifically want James Earl Jones or Charlton Heston narrating scripture, and who've decided that voice talent is worth navigating around the paywall design. The celebrity assets are unique; if they're what you want, no other app has them.
Our final word
Pray.com has the best celebrity-narrated audio content in the category — James Earl Jones reading the Bible is genuinely moving, and the kids' bedtime Bible stories are excellent. But in hands-on use, the paywall and pricing experience are by far the worst we encountered in any Bible-adjacent app. We saw price quotes shift between sessions, trial-to-paid transitions that aligned with the patterns App Store reviews have flagged for years, and privacy practices that Mozilla has consistently flagged as needing improvement. If you specifically want the celebrity audio content, set a calendar reminder to cancel before any trial ends, screenshot the price you're quoted, and proceed cautiously. Otherwise, Dwell at $59.99/year, Bible.is at $0, or Hallow Plus at $69.99/year are cleaner picks with comparable or better audio production. The audio is real; the trade-offs are too.
Best for
Listeners who specifically want celebrity-narrated audio Bible content (James Earl Jones, Charlton Heston) and bedtime Bible stories for kids.

What real users say
I listen to this app everyday. Every morning :) and every night :) I’m a big fan!!!
This App has helped me start the process of renewing, refreshing, & rewiring my mind… more important than that, most important of all, this app has showed me what Gods Love is. I forgot how much he loved me. And I spent my whole life working for something that wasn’t beneficial for my health, spirit, or mind. When I started listening to this app and reading the Bible, everything started slowing down. My breathing started changing. I was thinking things were possible that nobody in their right mind believes. I started seeing the world for what the world was. I know I need money to make a living and between God and I well find a way to pay the bills and hopefully pay other people’s bills at some point but I’ve always put the job/career first. I wasn’t acknowledging God for blessing me and taking care of me. I’m at a point in my life right now where I’m trying to figure out my calling and how to serve people. I see things in a way that I feel like God intended. One thing I know now, with all my heart and soul is I acknowledge God for everything he does and has done in my life for me and my dad. I thank him, I love him, I try my best to make him proud, I wanna help more people tho. Sorry, this App is 5 stars. I’d give it 10 if I could. I recommend it for everyone. It doesn’t matter the age. Thank you guys for being you ❤️

Amazing Prayer App.
I have extremely bad anxiety, I’m pretty sure it turns into panic attacks lately & seasonal depression that’s decided to hit me through spring but not so bad this summer. I’ve had it all of my life. No one seems to understand anxiety and it’s getting worse and harder to hide. I depend on this Prayer App because it helps hold me together along with my conversations (prayers) with God. These prayers always seem to be exactly what I need for any particular day most of the time. Most likely all if the time but sometimes they go a little over my head, but that’s ok. The guy that says the prayers after the verse has an amazing way of wording his prayers. So much do that I can feel every sentence he says. They come from his heart, brain and soul. He makes them so real. And I really like the lady’s prayer style too. Her prayers hit home too. I’m most likely going to subscribe to this app because I’ve listened to the prayers off and on for quite a while. I do t like accidentally missing them. The app will open more for me and hopefully help with this yucky scary anxiety that I get every single day. The ‘Write a Review’ page came just at the right time. I had just poured my heart out to God. He Is Answering. Thank you so so much! This really is an amazing app. Take care to all of the staff that makes this Pray App work. It makes a good difference in my life. ❤️🙏🏼❤️

Love the app
I love the app itself. It really makes me giving in my time with god more. I just have 2 suggestion based in my on experience. I wish the Bible language a NIV version because some of the Bible Verses that come up I don’t understand at all. It should more for the average person like me. The prayers are also focused more on church leaders then a just plain little person like me. I wished it would deal more if every day problems of an average person. And I don’t like the comparison with others on how many days in a row you pray. I understand it’s suppose to help you stay on it but it makes me feel like I need to keep up with others instead of focusing on my relationship with God! Sometimes I miss to press the button continue and then my streak is gone and it makes me feel bad even though I know it should not matter. These are just my opinions and suggestions. I do love the app and it has help me to further my relationship with God! Yes still having issues with the language KJV. Most of the time I don’t understand the verse at all. And still don’t like the streak version. At least don’t have the continue button. I am in a prayer state of mind and just close the app without hitting the continue button. If you don’t hit it you loose your streak. For those reasons I changed It to 4 stars. Really other than that I still enjoy the app.

Pray 🙏🏽 changes everything
I have extremely bad anxiety when I was younger my husband was injured and died after a few weeks later and I never sought help 🆘from a Professional. We had three children, all boys and I felt the need to find a father to give the boys guidance, 10 yrs. Later I had a daughter which was my desire and that relationship didn't work. I later started investing all my time in the kids, which led me down a dark path I got to a point I questioned everything they did who they hung out with, who they dated an where they would go, and so forth. It got to a point where I was becoming everyone’s mom and everyone’s everything until I was asked to please leave people alone. I left myself out and my stress levels and my anxiety levels kept rising higher until I got to this point where I'm now. So fast forward today I’ve had four strokes in the past three weeks which three we’re considered mild and one was not that bad but it was a bad stroke it left me walking a little funny and weak in my strength and gate are not so good I'm functioning on low levels. The only way I can sleep is that I listen to this app!!! It relaxes me immediately, puts me to rest so it does work greatly for me and I appreciate you thank you so much. Denise from Washington, DC.
